Looking Ahead: A report published by Integrity Florida highlights the growing trend of legislators using preemption, a doctrine that empowers states to override local governments when their views differ, to weaken home rule authority. Integrity Florida’s report clearly outlines the consequences of its erosion. As the 2020 legislative session begins, now is the time to focus on protecting this important right. Since 1968, when the residents of Florida approved a Constitutional Amendment, cities have been able to govern under local control/decision making. The Broward League of Cities will continue to support our residents’ ability to determine the direction of their own communities.
