Looking ahead: Drowning is the leading cause of death of children ages 1-4 years in Broward County, with the average of eight drowning fatalities annually. One way to safeguard children from drowning is to designate a “Water Watcher,” an adult who is responsible for providing 100 percent of their focus (never texting) on the children while they are in the water. Water Watchers should be able to swim, stay within easy reach of the children and wear tags that identify them as the person who is constantly alert while maintaining visual contact with the children.
