Looking ahead: Cities have been working with Broward County, the Department of Health, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau and the FWC to verify that local red tide information is accurate and timely. Red tide is not a new issue, but this year’s impact is greater and has spread throughout the state, raising concern in our cities. Red tide’s duration depends on environmental conditions that influence growth and persistence including sunlight, nutrients, salinity, and speed and direction of wind and water currents.
