Looking ahead: As more people look for news on their smartphones, tablets or computers, many residents are turning to their city’s social media accounts for the most updated information about their community. During Hurricane Irma, up-to-the-minute information about storm preparedness, local conditions, and now debris removal proved vital for planning and safety during the storm and recovery. Cities and elected officials should be commended for their use of social media to keep residents informed and safe. Social media affords cities an opportunity to engage with residents daily.
