February is Black History Month, a month-long celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of Black Americans. Broward County is rich in black history, with several figures shaping our early days, including Dr. James F. Sistrunk, a physician who founded the County’s first hospital for African-Americans; William H. Howard, one of Broward’s first African-American registered voters; the Mizell family, pioneer residents of Dania Beach; and Eula Bandy Johnson, a civil rights activist, and organizer of “wade-ins” at then-segregated beaches. Many Black local leaders are continuing to pave the way, and I’m honored to serve our ONE Broward community alongside them.
