Looking Ahead: Emmett Till was killed when I was eight years old. Black children had to endure the shame of not being able to drink at all-white water fountains, eat at lunch counters or try on clothes to make sure they fit. Black students never got new books but received old books laced with demeaning racial insults. The debate in Tallahassee to limit how and what our children are reading is incredibly divisive. We must all respect the rights and history of races and genders so that we learn from our past to provide a better future.
