Looking Ahead: Since 1976, every U.S. President has designated February as Black History Month. Schools and communities will be reflecting on historic accomplishments of Black Americans and will be celebrating the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. This year’s national theme is “Black Health and Wellness.” While we explore national Black scholars and medical practitioners, don’t forget our own culturally diverse history, where many Black Americans have paved the way for Broward’s cities, schools, libraries, hospitals, museums, and organizations. To name a few: Blanche Ely, Richard and Leola Collins, Dr. Von D. Mizell, Dr. James Sistrunk, Dr. Lois Delevoe, and Samuel Delevoe.
