Looking ahead: Broward County has one of the highest rates of drowning fatalities in children ages 1-4. Most drownings happen when a child wanders away from a supervised area without anyone noticing. Water Smart Broward, a drowning prevention initiative, suggests precautions to help reduce drownings. Children should be under active supervision at all times with an adult assigned as a water watcher. Unsupervised access to pools can be prevented by installing barriers and alarms. It is important to maintain or install drain covers, enroll children in swim lessons and know how to respond during an emergency by learning CPR and first aid. Read
