Looking ahead: Florida homeowners may be under the impression that they will save money if the 2018 proposed constitutional amendment to increase the homestead exemption passes. This is far from the truth. In the first year alone, the new exemption will result in a $73.7 million loss to Broward County and our 31 cities. Tough decisions will have to be made as to how to deal with this revenue loss, most likely through reduction in services/levels of service or increases in other revenue options.
