Broward County, FL (June 21, 2021) – On June 18, 2021, the Broward League of Cities recognized the 15 municipal officials from Broward County who were each presented with a Florida League of Cities’ (FLC) 2021 Home Rule Hero Award. Each award recipient was selected for their hard work and advocacy efforts during the 2021 Legislative Session.

“Despite the challenges of COVID-19, this year’s award recipients have truly gone above and beyond the call of duty by energizing our advocacy efforts to protect Home Rule for our 31 municipalities,” said Beverly Williams, President of Broward League of Cities. “I urge all Broward County stakeholders to follow their lead and energize to strengthen Home Rule so our local elected officials can best serve their individual communities.”

Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems with local solutions with minimal state interference. Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials, both elected and nonelected, who consistently responded to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and help give a local perspective on an issue.

“The 2021 award recipients engaged with legislators, shared their stories and made their voices heard, and it made a difference,” said FLC Director of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “On behalf of the League and its legislative team, it’s my sincere honor to recognize this year’s award recipients and thank them for their service.”
