Broward County is fortunate to have an effective and successful mental health court. The court, under the leadership of Judge Cindy Lerner Wren, helps people with mental illness and co-occurring disorders gain access to community-based treatment and services rather than serve jail time. Focusing on nonviolent, misdemeanor defendants who are incapable of facing charges, the court diverts them into treatment before they face trial providing they follow the court’s direction. By dealing with actual problems of mental illness, rather than just symptoms, this effort makes our cities better places for our residents and those that most desperately need help. Read.
