If local governments must bear the cost of relocation of utilities, as proposed through legislation supported by many Florida’s telecommunications companies, cities and their taxpayers would have to pay the cost. Local governments currently have the authority to require utility companies to pay costs associated with relocating their utilities out of rights of way or public utility easements to accommodate public needs such as road improvement projects. This added expense would hurt local governments and taxpayers by adding millions of dollars to local projects. Costs for improving and relocating utility lines should continue to be the responsibility of utility companies. Read article.
