Disturbing issues raised by the recent Miami Herald expose of corruption at Lowell Correctional Institution reflect serious issues at the Florida Department of Corrections. A compelling wake-up call, it’s one that cannot be ignored. Prisoners should, at a minimum, be treated with basic human dignity, and the horrendous mistreatment has to stop. But, fault never lies with one entity. Lack of funding resulting in low salaries, absence of training for corrections officers, and a system that is stressed by an increasing prison population needs a swift and effective overhaul.
